The electronic health record (EHR) is often cited as a source of frustration, but in an ideal world, it can support quality initiatives, improve patient safety, and make it easier to take care of patients. Dr. Orenstein is an expert in clinical informatics and using the EHR to implement quality initiatives to improve patient outcomes. Examples of his work include increasing influenza vaccination rates in the acute care setting, medication safety, and central line documentation. All these examples apply to the daily practice of pediatric hematology/oncology providers who often have multiple quality initiatives and patient care concerns competing for their time and effort. How data is entered into the system impacts the data we are able to extract and can have direct implications on one's ability to track quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the frustrations many feel about EHR. Dr. Orenstein will demonstrate successful initiatives as an example of what is possible and how the EHR can be leveraged to assist in improving and standardizing quality care for patients with cancer and blood disorders.
