Webinar - Strategies to Provide Comprehensive Care to Adolescents and Young Adults with Genetic Blood Disorders

Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) with genetic blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and hemophilia have specific health needs that are difficult to completely address within the confines of their comprehensive disease care. In this webinar, we will focus on the most common disorder, sickle cell disease, and review their unique biopsychosocial needs and provide strategies to help address these needs within the comprehensive care visit. We will review health care aspects specific to AYA patients as well as barriers faced by AYA patients with other genetic blood disorders such as thalassemia and hemophilia. Since these patients may be treated in adult or pediatric clinics, we will present both an adult and pediatric perspective. These strategies can then be utilized within the clinical setting when caring for this unique population.

• Describe the biopsychosocial aspects of care unique to adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease.
• Compare essential aspects of care as well as potential barriers faced by AYAs with other genetic blood disorders with those associated with AYA patients with SCD.
• Identify 3 strategies to incorporate essential aspects of AYA care into the comprehensive care of patients with genetics blood disorders.
