Webinar - Diversity in the Scientific Workforce

The webinar will present evidence for why diversity is important for the scientific and medical workforce, as well as an overview of key issues in this area. The presentation will offer a socio-cultural perspective to better understand the factors that impact an individual's decision to enter and stay in a scientific/medical career. Some of these factors could be influenced by gender, stage of career, ethnicity, mentorship, potential for career advancement, as well as geographic influences. The goal is to use this perspective to illuminate new thinking and practices for more inclusive scientific workforce training and career development.

Attendees of the webinar will gain important tools and information to apply these concepts to their daily work:

1. The presentation will explain diversity and inclusion concepts and scientific studies that are relevant in everyday physicians' practices. Implicit bias, stereotyping and communication across cultural groups not only affect interactions with patients but also with other physicians that subtly shape a workplace culture.
2. The presentation provides a brief update on the current initiatives and goals of ASPHO's Diversity Advisory Group.
